Over the course of this month, we've focused on National Elder Law awareness. This designation serves as a time to share resources and recommit to protecting one of our most vulnerable populations - our seniors. For attorney JP Sawyer, a leading advocate in Alabama for nursing home residents and their families, this observance offers a moment to reflect, re-energize, and renew the fight for dignity, safety, and justice.
To close out this important month, hear directly from JP about why his work is so important.

Elder law isn't just about legal documents or asset protection—it’s about ensuring that seniors receive the care, respect, and protection they deserve. In Alabama, too many elderly individuals suffer neglect, abuse, or exploitation, often behind the closed doors of nursing homes and long-term care facilities. And when that happens, they need someone willing to step in, stand up, and speak out.
For more than two decades, I have focused my practice on holding negligent nursing homes accountable and securing justice for victims and their families. I'm not a generalist. I don't dabble in nursing home cases, I am dedicated to them. This focus allows me to be a resource not just for clients, but also for my fellow lawyers across Alabama who are seeking to refer their toughest nursing home cases.
Whether it’s physical abuse, medical neglect, bedsores, falls, medication errors, or wrongful death, I have seen it all, and I've built a reputation for handling these cases with compassion, precision, and results.
You can trust that I know the landscape. I welcome referrals and co-counsel arrangements. Because laws, regulations, and care standards change, I am able to share insights and resources that help lawyers and families remain current.
Advocating for the elderly isn't just legal work, it’s moral work. It’s about telling the truth when others won’t, holding institutions accountable, and making Alabama a safer place to grow old. As we bring National Elder Law Month to a close, join me in recommitting to standing up for those who can’t stand up for themselves and contact me when I can help.
